  19. Well, it's rather quaint to imagine that these homeopathic drug companies
  20. are small cottage industries, but they're usually not--they're quite large
  21. firms, often European-based.  If they were forced to prove efficacy, they'd
  22. undoubtedly have to spend the money do so, which would mean fewer profits
  23. (as well as little guarantee of success.)  None of this is in the interest
  24. of the homeopathic drug firms, however much good it will do for the consumer.
  25. What Robert is saying is that researchers are unlikely to get a lot of NIH
  26. funds to perform studies.  However, that ignores the role the drug manu-
  27. facturers themselves can and should play, as beneficiaries of the public's
  28. gullibility.

  30. As it is, at least in the US, the sale of homeopathic medicines is allowed
  31. by being grandfathered in the Pure Food and Drug Act, and is unlikely to
  32. change anytime soon.
