- I've been following the comments following on from Sue's letter about
- solar energy. I would like to add a further dimension. Electricity is a
- premium tool. True, but look what we use it for! Much of the discussion
- of Sue's letter did not really question what we need energy for. There
- was an assumption that we need electricity and how to tap various
- renewable sources to provide electricity.
-
- Both solar and geothermal sources enjoy a considerable advantage over
- other renewable systems, in that they supply energy in a from which we
- in the UK at least accounts for a large part of our annual energy
- consumption, namely space heating. Using solar energy can often come
- down to effective forms of demand management, rather than building large
- technical supply systems. For example designing a building to catch the
- sun's rays more effectively. Using solar energy will not be only be a
- question of building a better tool to harness it, but asking what we need
- it for.
-
- Don't use air conditioning, open the window!
