- Violence related to poverty tends to take place where poor people are.
- We had a similar situation in LA regarding riots, where the logical place
- to burn was in the suburbs, but the places actually burned were in the
- poorer sections of the city. In that case there was no police "protection"
- of anything because they were playing a risky political game. The amount
- of personal income spent on protection is not a
- taxpayer concern, nor is it clear to me that the rich spend a higher
- percentage of income for protection than do the poor.
-
- This does not imply that reducing violence is not a proper use of tax money
- or anything like that, only that it is not a good argument for
- progressive taxation.
