  11. Floating around on sci.crypt this past weekend, there seems to be another
  12. round of the taunt: "what secrets could an individual have which could
  13. warrant cryptography?"

  16. Let's try some scenarios:

  18. a husband and wife, separated by a business trip, talking intimately and
  19. privately (they think) over a cellular or wireless phone (or even a normal
  20. wired phone (eg., in a hotel))
  21.  
  22. two members of any of the thousands of *.Anonymous groups (a.k.a. 12-step
  23. groups) in this country
  24.  
  25. someone who is HIV positive, employed by a company which would fire him/her
  26. if they knew, talking to another HIV positive friend
  27.  
  28. two free-lance engineers, separated by a distance, cooperating on an
  29. invention which will revolutionize <X>
  30.  
  31. [borrowed from earlier on sci.crypt] an incest surviver getting counselling
  32. while going through the turmoil of the flood of memories when the initial
  33. memory log-jam breaks

  37. It might be good to make an even more complete list.  However, I believe
  38. that we need *only one*.  Each of these is innocent.  Each requires
  39. privacy.  In none of these cases is it the business of any government
  40. agency what is being discussed.  Therefore, they have no right to listen
  41. in.  It is especially not good for any criminal organization to tap these
  42. conversations (phone, e-mail, FAX, videoconference, ...).

  44. As I said, all it takes is one.  I've listed 5.

  46. Let's hear no more of this "what could innocent people have to hide?" 
  47. nonsense.
