- I would like to get some perspective on the current
- and future (5 years) uses of computers in undergraduate
- chemistry education. I am a mathematician who is
- involved with making plans for math and science
- departments that may have a long term effect. There
- is not any strong indication from the chemistry
- faculty that computers are/will be important in the
- lower division service courses. Computers are currently
- used now and then in labs for data analysis.
-
- Being interested in computer issues I am aware of the new
- field of computational chemistry. I am also aware that
- dynamical systems like several coupled harmonic oscillators
- can be simulated and visualized, since I have done so myself.
- Do these developments have no impact on undergraduate
- chemistry?
-
- I know what curriculum projects the NSF is supporting in
- math, but not in chemistry. Are there innovative projects
- requiring advanced workstations for teaching chemistry?
-
- I know that chemists use Maple, Mathematica, Matlab. Will
- these be demanded for use in the chemistry curriculum?
-
- Should the chemistry dept want its majors to be using a
- computer in their calculus classes? Should we expect the
- chemistry faculty to ask for an introductory course in
- Maple/Mathematica taught by the math dept?
-
- I would appreciate the opinions and experience of those
- who know more about these questions than I do. I will monitor
- this newsgroup, but if you want to be sure I get your
- message, send it to me directly.
