- Certain pyrotechnic twinkling strobe compositions use a reaction where
- strontium or barium sulfate and magnesium react for the 'flash'. Calcium
- sulfate can also be used but doesn't produce a good color.

- Also, barium sulfate is reduced with carbon to barium sulfide when recovering
- barium from a barium sulfate ore. I mention strontium and barium sulfate since
- they are somewhat similar to calcium sulfate.
