- It may depend in part on your perspective. Shifting from HC
- fueled cars to electrics shifts the location of the pollution
- source. This has 3 significant impacts
- 1) moves source from city to rural areas (usually but not
- always)
- 2) source operates at lower total pressure; less NOx than a car
- engine would give at 8:1 compression ratio (but also possibly
- more SOx)
- and
- 3) source is now stationary- cheaper and more effective
- pollution control options can be invoked. On the down side
- there might be a lot more CO/CO2 generated per mile given the
- likely efficiency loss for
- fuel->electricity->battery->motor->motion.
-
- Of course in the final analysis there is still pollution being
- generated; I see no way around it. After all if you walk instead
- of ride you will expell CO2, work up an appetite, eat more food,
- more tractors running to make food for those hungry hikers, more
- fertilizer production, shoes wear out faster- shoe factories (in
- korea?) gear up.....I may have just discovered what makes the
- planet spin! :-)
