-
- I've found (and friends agree) that you should try different positions
- yourself and see where feels more balanced for you, and less prone to spin
- out. One point that may leed you one way or other is the turning ability of
- different positions. The further forward you have the fin, the smaller will
- be your turning circle (but more prone to spin out), the further back the
- opposite.
-
- Others may know more about it, and have better advice.
-
- >2) How can you prevent cavetation (sp ?)?
-
- I don't know the term.
-
- >3) How long should your fin be?
-
- That depends on the above partly, but more on what type of board you have and
- what type of sailing you do. Wave fins tend to be shorter and swept back.
- Slalom fins are straight (in comparison) and longer. Racing fins (speed) are
- longer again I believe (but I haven't seen one). So do you do lots of turns,
- jibes etc. or do you go in straight lines more?

-
- I wholeheartedly agree with him. I have the following sizes of sail: 4.0m,
- 4.5m, 5.0m, 5.7m and 6.2m. I would suggest (but it depends a bit on you
- weight and your board) the following.
- 5-10 mph >7m
- 10-15 mph 6m
- 15-20 5.5m
- 20-25 5m
- 25-30 4.5
- 30-35 4 or less
-
- I weight 90kg (180 pounds) so if you are lighter, I'd tone all the sizes
- down.
-
- >5) What do you look for in a good sail?
-
- Shape.
-
- >6) How does the shape of a fun, slalom, wave sail affect its

-
- Slalom and race sails give much greater power for the same area, but are
- harder to turn (much less manouverable). Wave sails the opposite.

-
- All the above are based on my own experience and conclusion/assumptions I have
- made after 5 years of sailing. Others may offer more knowledgeable answers.
