- Actually, that was two years ago, Tim. It was Joel Wade. He placed quite
- a bit lower last year, though I forget exactly what his standing was.
- Maybe 6th? (I can go check the video, if anyone really cares. Come to
- think of it, don't *you* have this video too, Tim?) This year, he had over
- 400 hours of tunnel time and 200 jumps coming into the competition. It's a
- damned shame he hurt himself, since he probably could really have shown us
- some good stuff. It was a "hook turn" accident, though the problem wasn't
- in misjudging the height, it was in not noticing someone else landing in a
- different direction. Basically it seems to have simply been bad judgement
- in doing a hard hook in crowded landing conditions on a no-wind day in a
- parking lot with obstacles and no streamers. If ever there was a time to
- be mellow about landing, that seems to have been it. But he hooked it, and
- plowed into Jamie Paul's canopy from the front. Jamie said that his foot
- kicked one of his cameras, which gives you an idea of the relative height.
- Pendulumed into the ground and knocked himself cold. He spent three days
- in the hospital. Word is that he'll be OK, though I don't know how badly
- he was hurt.
-
- Note that these folks with a few hundred jumps are not exactly raw
- students. At some smaller DZs they might even be called "experienced".
- It's just that they have a lot fewer jumps than most international
- competitors. It might be that because they're so hot in freefall they
- maybe have an overcasual attitude about canopy control, but it's not sheer
- inexperience.

- Well, I guess there's only one way to find out. A tunnel party in
- Tennessee, anyone?
-
- >Tim
- >hehe they called him 'the wind tunnel rat' last year :-)
-
- I heard the term "tunnel rat" applied as a generic noun to several people
- at the competition. It seems to have entered the vernacular.
