- At the Dive 92 exhibition recently at the NEC Birmingham, I attended
- a seminar on adventurous diving, which discussed the merits of Nitrox
- and enriched/mixed gas diving. This was presented by Rob Palmer of the
- European Association Of Technical Divers(EATD), which is affiliated to
- the International Assoc. Of Nitrox Divers.
-
- The seminar was very good and put forward a good argument for the use of
- mixed gas diving, but most importantly, with the emphasis on safe well
- planned diving. The seminar was not designed to push Nitrox, but simply
- to present the facts, both for and against, and leave the listener to make
- up their own minds. The opinion formed was that this is not for the dabbler,
- but for the serious organised diver, who does not necessarily want to push
- limits, but who would like to make existing diving limits safer. Undoubtedly
- the type of diving on offer in the UK, could benefit by reducing the effects
- of Nitrogen narcosis on many of our wreck sites.
-
- My main reason for posting is not necessarily to get flamed on the
- subject, or stir another hornets nest, but to try and find out generally
- what peoples opinions are in the UK. Bearing in mind the usual high
- standard of training offered by BSAC in the UK, and the general sensible
- attitude of our divers.
-
- Not really having had sufficient time to speak to BSAC reps on the day,
- there still seems to have been no real statement made by BSAC on this
- subject, well not as far as I know. There have been unsubstantiated
- rumours that BSAC are currently looking into the subject, but still with
- no definite commitment.
-
- Therefore I feel there are a number of issues here,
-
- What is BSAC's stance on this subject?
-
- Are they for or against?
-
- Will BSAC be offering any reasonable priced courses for certification
- in line with their current quality of training?
-
- Answers on a postcard please.
-
-
- ps Are there any officials of BSAC that read this group in the UK?,
- a contact point would be useful.
