- Here's a take from someone who has thousands of dives under his belt:
-
- It is said that how often you dive will be a factor in at what depth and
- with what severity you will be affected by nitrogen narcosis. I have
- not found this to be particulalry true. I *always* start feeling
- symptoms at 125', no matter with what frequency I am diving (e.g. twice
- daily vs. once every two weeks). What I do find is that my ability to
- deal with the symptoms is affected. The more frequently I am diving,
- the better able I am to keep my trip together.
-
- The same is true of the "common wisdom" that the rate of your descent
- will be a factor. I get narc'ed the same no matter how fast I descend,
- but when the effects come on gradually (as they do with a slower ascent,
- obviously), I am much better prepared to deal with it.
-
- I have never been able to count even as high as three any deeper than
- about 175'. At depths greater than 200', AT LEAST 95% of my mental
- energy is used staying alive, with only 5% left for getting anything
- useful done. Dives to that depth should NEVER be made on scuba using
- compressed air.
-
- The effects of nitrogen narcosis vary widely from person to person, and
- within a person according to factors I know not what (one day I tied a
- perfect bowline at 220', the next day I didn't know enough to get down
- current from the work so silt wouldn't obscure what I was supposed to be
- doing.
-
- Nitrogen narcosis is not a toy!!!
