- Hi!,
- I have not been reading this group regularly.
- So apologies if this question has been discussed before.
- Basically, I want to know what are the purposes of forms ?.
- I do not see why there is so much emphasis on them. How can it help someones
- ability as a martial artist ?. Finally, how should one perform a form ?.
- That is, do you picture an oponent in front of you while performing ?.
-
- Oh, what the heck. I'll take a stab at it.
-
- As I see it, kata (forms) fill three basic needs:
-
- 1. Kata act as a repository of information. The collection of
- techniques in a form represent a summary of the teachings of the
- founder(s) of the style. In a sense, kata can be thought of as a
- catalog of the art. Kata are something that can stay more or less
- fixed through successive generations of teachers, thus maintaining
- continuity in the style.
-
- 2. Kata teach "basic forms." As human beings, we can only bend in
- certain ways, we can only achieve good balance in certain positions,
- and we can only generate speed and power from certain movements. Kata
- help us ingrain these basic types of movement into our reflexes.
-
- 3. Kata act as a self-teaching tool. Because our opponents are
- imaginary (in many empty-handed styles) we are forced to imagine the
- possible applications of each technique. This helps us understand
- what we are trying to accomplish, and helps us learn to use our minds
- to train our bodies.
-
- Perhaps I should mention that there is a major difference between
- Kendo kata and Karate kata: Kendo kata are done with a partner. This
- forces the Kendo student to accept one single interpretation of the
- purpose of each technique, because each technique is directly applied
- to a real opponent. On the other hand, having a real partner allows
- the Kendo student to explore the realm of timing more thoroughly,
- since imaginary opponents tend to attack us only when we're ready.
