  20.      Well, an old highschool buddy of mine popped up last year 
  21. (just bailed out of the army, looking for a job) and while we were 
  22. talking and catching up on each others' lives he mentioned that 
  23. while in the army he'd been trained up to the 1st Dan level in 
  24. Shotokan Karate.  The way he said it made me think that this 
  25. wasn't at all unusual, perhaps even common.
  26.      Since I'm only 6th Ryu (in Shotokan Karate), and since he 
  27. mentioned tutoring others in Shotokan, I asked him to review my 
  28. technique and help me out in making it more practical (I've been 
  29. practicing on my own away from a dojo/sensei for two years now).  
  30. He had plenty of advice to offer, and showed me "the right way" to 
  31. do a combat inside-shuto strike, among other things..
