- Relative to previous posts on the merit of the .444 Marlin as
- an Elk rifle. While I have a 20+yr old one, I have yet to take
- it as my "main" rifle Elk hunting, I opt for my Browning lever
- in .308, or Ruger 30-06, leaving the .444 as a backup so to speak.
- This is just me, not the rifle, as it will hit the mark every time
- as long as I do my part.
-
- There are only 2 "problems" or "drawbacks" with that caliber,
- in my opinion:
-
- (1) Effective range is ( or should be ) limited to 150 yard MAX.
- After that bullet drop is like a rock. I realize the "old timers"
- with their 45/70's and Sharps Buffalo Guns were supposed to be
- able to lob their 500 grain bullets into game at fantastic ranges,
- and supposedly one could do similiar with the .444, but I don't
- feel that is acceptable in the reality of responsible hunting today.
-
- (2) Factory ammo is underpowered and uses the same bullet as the
- .44 mag handgun. I've heard that Remington has a 265 grain load,
- but never have been able to find a gun shop that ever had it or
- could get it. The only way I found to really use the .444 to its
- full potential is handload. I have a hunter/friend who has worked
- up some hefty loads for me using 300 grain Barnes bullets. I think
- these would certainly be Elk worthy, and could most likely take a
- Moose with no problem, provided I could get within 100 - 125 yards.
-
- With that said, its a well built rifle, and like the 45/70, a "fun"
- caliber to shoot, and if if I didn't have my .308 hang-up I might
- have used it for Elk by now. In case anyone wonders ( or cares! ),
- if I was only able to have just ONE rifle ( heaven forbid! ) I
- would opt for 30-06 as the one most all-around caliber, what with
- the variety of bullets & loadings availiable over the counter.
-
- And now that I've got the 7mm mag people PO'd at me I end this!!
