- I just wanted to put in my 2 cents regarding the PPK.
-
- I had a PPK/S in stainless several years ago. It's a beautifully made gun,
- and has all the desirable features other posters have mentioned.
-
- HOWEVER, I feel it is not a good gun for a casual shooter.
-
- I don't know if it's just me, but I ALWAY got the familar Walther "bite" on
- the base of my thumb, that gun had a nasty "bark" and sharp recoil which I
- haven't felt in my 9mm's or .45s or revolvers. It's the most unpleasant gun
- I've shot.
-
- I was teaching my wife to shoot it, and I made a bad mistake. After talking
- her through a few magazines I made the mistake of not watching her grip as
- carefully as I should. She (having VERY long fingers) managed to put her weak
- hand thumb behind the slide. She shot the pistol, and then quickly put it
- down. She had sliced her thumb to the bone on the slide as it kicked back.
-
- I was the dummy who let her do it so I know that's not the guns fault. (she
- NEVER holds her Glock incorrectly. I'm just pointing out it's a hard gun for
- the tyro to do well with. Add to that a really heavy trigger pull, non-
- existents sights, and fumbling around with a saftey and I think you've got
- less than an ideal combo.
-
- Add to this the gun is expensive and heavy and I think it's a pistol which
- gets most of it's buyers from it's "mystique". If it's good enough for Bond,
- it's good enough for me. (hey, that's why I bought it when I didn't know any
- better)
-
- I think there are several better choices. Among them,
-
- 1) Glock 19 (carried condition 3 or chambered in a holster
- 2) One of the S&W snubs (the Ruger is way too heavy, carry a full sized gun
- if you're going to carry the SP101.
- 3) The little Beretta .22 tip up. (I don't know the exact model number)
-
- In any event, have the user of the pistol TRY it out at the range before
- buying them one. If they don't like the gun better to find out before they
- buy it, and then never practice with it...
-
-
- btw - My wife still ended up marrying me, even after I let her slice her
- thumb. And she has turned into a pretty good shot! We both learned from my
- mistake, she just suffered more for it. ;-(
