- David, you didn't say what sort of rifle you're using. There are offset
- sights available for target rifles to overcome precisely this sort
- of problem - they work like a miniature periscope mounted horizontally,
- so a right-handed shooter can use his or her left eye. Of course,
- they aren't cheap! Alternatively, a simple piece of plastic
- attached to the rear sight will block the vision of the left eye -
- this is what I use so I can shoot with both eyes open and not have
- to squint.
-
- #.... The clay target shooters I know
- #combat this problem by putting a small, translucent disk on their shooting
- #glasses so that the front bead is obscured from the dominant eye when in
- #the "gun-mounted-waiting-for-a-target" position. This keeps the dominant
- #eye from supplying incorrect positional information when the sight plane is
- #close to the target but it allows both eyes to be used for target
- #aquisition on targets that are outside the range of the obscuring disc.
- #These discs are available from some eyewear shops but alot of people just
- #cut a small piece of Scotch tape and use it.
-
- A lot of pistol shooters do the same thing, covering the non-dominant
- eye with target patches stuck onto ordinary shooting glasses (the
- cheap solution) or buying fancy shooting glasses which have an opaque
- eyeshield (the expensive solution).
-
- I should add that for pistol shooting I prefer to shoot with both eyes
- open and unobstructed, as I find it helps me to concentrate on the
- front sight. Of course, with a pistol it doesn't really matter which
- eye is dominant.
