  18. While I agree that the 10mm should give good performance out of
  19. a submachine gun, I doubt it will ever be a popular cartridge
  20. even for this.  One reason for the existence for the submachine
  21. gun is to give improved performance with AVAILABLE pistol cartridges.
  22. Since it does not appear likely that the 10mm will be widely adopted
  23. as a pistol cartridge, it will probably never be a popular sub gun
  24. cartridge either.  As an example, look at the available sub guns now.
  25. Almost all are 9mm, since almost all service pistols are 9mm.  When
  26. .45 ACP was a popular service cartridge, .45 ACP sub guns were popular,
  27. but now they are fairly rare.

  39. Yes, in the latest guns and ammo they fired 10mm out of a Thompson carbine
  40. with a 16 inch barrel.  The hottest load, PMC 170gr JHP, reached 1293 fps
  41. with energy of 668 ft-lbs.  This is considerably lower than .30-30 which
  42. will reach about 2400-2500 fps or so with a 130-150gr bullet.  In contrast,
  43. IMI 125 gr JHP .357 reaches 2031 fps in a 16 inch barrel (1145 ft-lbs) and
  44. the Remington 140 gr reaches 1894 fps is the same barrel (1115 ft-lbs).  The
  45. .44 magnum, using the IMI 180 gr JHP, reaches 2175 fps (1891 ft-lbs) in an 18
  46. inch barrel.
