- Max set = 28 last time I tried. Might make 30 now. This is not something
- I do often - maybe once or twice a year. It hurts to much and I'm not sure
- how valuable it is. I do a lot of pull-up type training, but I usually do
- pull-up intervals or weighted pull-ups instead.
-
- Best onsight = 12a/b. Best redpoint = 12b.
-
- Do you think the correlation is the more pull-ups you can do the harder
- you can climb? OR is it the harder you climb, the harder you train, therefore
- you can do more pull-ups?
-
- Other interesting questions:
- - Can folks do a one-arm? I can't quite.
- - How much weight or what percent of body weight can you add and still do
- one pull-up? I've done this with 90 lbs (about 68%).
- - How many pull-ups can you do in 20 minutes (endurance)? My best was 20
- sets of 8 for a total of 160.
-
- Personally pull-ups and flash ability have not changed together. I could do
- 20 or 22 pull-ups back when I was struggling to lead 5.7 at the Gunks. Two
- years later I could not do more pull-ups, but was leading 10+.
-
- In recent years I have trained in cycles. At the end of the "gym" phase, I'm
- at my strongest (most pull-ups, pull-ups with greatest additional weight,...),
- but I'm not climbing my best. It is 4-6 weeks later (at least) when I've
- been back on the rock that my onsight ability peaks.
-
- In general, my onsight ability changes very slowly these days. I can usually
- onsight mid to hard 5.11 after not climbing for months (I always boulder).
- Training hard makes me more solid for another letter grade or two. But I bet
- most of this gain is from the bouldering, not the pull-ups or weight lifting.
-
- My gut feel is that my best climbing correlates to the number of days I've
- climbed recently.
