- I just had a somewhat similar experience, only I did call
- the police and contacted my insurance agent.
- I was driving in a residential neighborhood at about
- 25 mph when suddenly a girl decided to do a U turn without
- looking to make sure no one was coming. Anyway, I called
- the police they came ticketed her for doing an unsafe U-turn
- and I was told that the girl's insurance should take care of
- my deductible. I later contacted my insurance agent who told
- my insurance rate will not be affected since it was the other
- party's fault.
- The damage to my bumper was around $200 while my deductible
- was $250, so my insurance company informed me that they
- have no "monetary interest" in the matter, thus I should
- settle things with the other party's insurance. After
- several phone calls to her company an adjustor representing
- the other party's insurance company came by yesterday and
- looked at the car, today I received his estimate which came
- out similar to the estimate I had gotten from my own company.
- The adjustor tells me that he has sent the estimate to the
- insurance company he represents, then they will send me
- a check to the amount of his estimate. According to the
- adjustor I should then take it and fix (after receiving the
- check) and if there is any discrepancy between the amount
- he estimated and the amount it actually comes out to be,
- then they will take care of it. But he assured me that
- all reputable repair shops will accept his estimate and
- go by it.
-
- My question now is: did I make a mistake by believing
- my company's claim that since there was no fault on my
- behalf and since they did not incur any expense, then
- my rates will not be affected ?
-
- I can't believe that the better option when I am not at
- fault would be to tiptoe around my insurance agency
- that collects the premiums and does not help me collect
- on damages from other companies since they have "no
- monetary interest". Then to top it off I have to eat
- the deductible to avoid getting my rate hiked up !!!!!
- Either I lose or I lose, even when I'm not at fault.
