- My brother and I rented a new Grand Am while back in Michigan last
- September for a funeral. Positive points: comfortable ride; decent
- acceleration. Negatives: the automatic trans was jerky when it
- shifted. It had bizarre, 'half-wishbone' interior door handles -
- more akin to the designer paddle-shaped faucet handles for your bathroom;
- and power door locks - but no power windows. These door locks sometimes
- locked when you started the car; sometimes not. Likewise the unlocking
- feature. The glove box was a *very* flimsey plastic drawer...the left
- side framing as only about 2" wide while the right was a more stable 4' -
- 5". The storage area in the dash just above the center console had
- something sharp - like a screw - protruding inside the compartment. My
- brother raked the top of his hand when he reached in to retrieve his
- sunglasses. Last but not least, the in-door shoulder belt (shudder!).
- Ooops - almost forgot to mention that the engine sounded rather like a
- wound-up Singer sewing machine with a bit of bass thrown in for good
- measure.
-
- Our overall impression was that the car was cheesy. There was an obvious
- lack of attention to detail throughout. I couldn't wait to get back to
- my Toyota after four days with the Grand Am. My brother had a renewed
- appreciation for his Mazda, too :-).
