- |
- |There is only one drop-in Freon replacement that I'm aware of and
- |that's the GHG-12 replacement that I've been working with George Goble
- |ghg@ecn.purdue.edu, on. It has not yet been blessed by GMC so the
- |dealer would likely not be using it. Besides it increases the cooling
- |capacity of the system 20-30%, depending on the particular system.
- |
- |There is a substitute from Dupont called SUVA MP-52. It requires a different
- |kind of oil and is not a drop-in. Installation requires a complete flush
- |of the system and the replacement of at least the dryer. Cooling capacity
- |is unknown.
-
- Well, "Environment Friendly" Du Pont here is offering a S$500 (approx US$300)
- rebate on the 1st 100 cars in for a SUVA retrofit. Actual cost is
- S$2500-S$3000, or so they say. When're you marketing GHG-12?

- |The R-134a replacement is a major undertaking. Just about everything except
- |the evaporator must be changed. Industry estimates at conversion costs
- |range from $800-$1200 for a passenger car. Neither R-134a nor SUVA may
- |be just plopped in an existing system. Corrosive destruction and/or
- |almost immediate oil failure will be the result.
- |
- |Your friend needs to find out what was put in his system pronto.
