- DO NOT BUY A THIRD PARTY WARRANTY!!!!!
- I bought my Ford in March, it's an '88 T-Bird with (at the time) 66k on
- the original engine and turbo. I loved it so on initial test drive that
- I probably paid too much for it at a used car dealer. I was worried
- about the engine/turbo/transmission with high mileage /my student
- budget, so I bought that car because it had a warranty. Don't get me
- wrong, I loved the car, but didn't look for one elsewhere because I was
- offered a 2yr/24000 mile warranty on every lubricated system. This meant
- engine, turbo, transmission, power steering, differential, etc. Not
- a bumper-to-bumber, but enough to cure my worries about the mileage.
- The company that offered it is(was) Automotive Guarantee Corp, or AGC
- The used car dealer acted as a representative, and I agreed to pay
- another 480$ for this 'premium' coverage. BTW, this was one of those
- 'product warrantees' like Wynn offers also. You add their anti-friction
- additives to engine, transmission, differential, compressors, pumps,
- hair, ... every so often. The dealer gave me the initial bottle of
- 'stuff' (wow, a 5.95 value!!!) and said when my paperwork was
- processed I'd get more through the mail from time to time. Well, that
- was March. In June, I called the toll-free number on the contract
- to find out why I hadn't received any more product. I got a recording
- from the phone company that the number was no longer in service. After
- calling directory assistance in Raleigh, I determined that the company
- either moved, or dropped of the earth. So I called my (un) friendly
- used car dealer to ask about it. He said that he was sorry but the
- company had been shut down by the Attorney General in Raleigh. Great,
- so I now have no warranty!
-
- Subsequent calls to the Attorney General's office have informed me that
- AGC closed down voluntarily after hearing of an impending suit by
- that office. This was either the day before or the day of my purchase
- of the warranty. Why didn't the dealer know of this, or did he and
- kept all of my money, not just his 100$ commission? I have
- a complaint form sitting at home, that if AGC is liquidated I may get some
- small portion of my 500$ back. Here's the trick: My receipt adds the
- warrantee price to the purchase price of the vehicle, so there's no
- itemization of how much I paid for the warrantee at all! I guess
- I was the sucker born at the wrong minute this time....
