  22. Don't get a 3rd party warranty.  In most states the implied warranty
  23. of merchantability (i.e. "the car has to go from one place to another,
  24. regardless of what the fine print says"), which is often much stronger
  25. than the manufacturer's explicit warranty, runs for one year or the
  26. length of the explicit warranty, whichever is longer.

  28. Thus, if you get a six year warranty from Ford and something breaks
  29. that shouldn't have, e.g. the transmission, and they don't want to fix
  30. it (we're talking Ford after all), you can sue them under the warranty
  31. of merchantability and forget that the fine print excludes
  32. transmissions or says "unless the owner didn't change the fluid" or
  33. whatever.

  35. By the way, car companies put language in to make you think you don't
  36. have this implied warranty, but in most states, including MA, a
  37. consumer cannot sign away his implied warranty no matter what.

  39. In summary, if you get a 3rd party warranty you are bound by the fine
  40. print, which will likely be very favorable to the insurer.  If you get
  41. a Ford warranty, they (legally, at least) have to treat you fairly.
