I suppose the SCMS-fee part is not required but it makes life alot easier. The recording companies have done their job by killing the widespread acceptance of DAT machines and making sure the cheap ones have SCMS. That way they discourage copying or CD's, discourage the dissemination of cheap prortable recording studios in "everyones" houses, discourage share-ware/free-ware music etc etc. No flame intended and your point is well taken.
