- The RS ads in magazines are interesting. At the top of the page they show
- "Analog Compact Cassette 1965" and "Digital Compact Disk 1982" in a rectangle
- with the word EVOLUTIONARY in large bold type between them. Underneath they
- have their less-than-beautiful DCC deck with a DCC tape sitting on top of it,
- under the word REVOLUTIONARY.
-
- Interesting. Either they are attempting to imply that the transition from
- analog cassette to CD was "evolutionary" (huh?) or that compact cassette and CD
- were each evolutionary developments. Hard to understand why DCC is
- "revolutionary" in that (or most any other) context.
-
- Some of the ad copy is pretty frightening too:
-
- "Now enjoy the best of both worlds"
-
- So the best thing about CD is *compressed* digital audio? Huh? And I guess the
- random access time on DCC must be similar to CD. And that the tape will hold up
- as well as a disk to wear. Yep - the "best" of CD...
-
- "Make perfect copies of your CD's..."
-
- Perfect? So lossy compression can create 'perfect' copies?
-
- "...indistinguishable from originals..."
-
- The only person I've seen claim this is Ken Pohlmann in Stereo Review. Every
- other report I've read claims otherwise.
-
- The Phillips ad for DCC (which shows a two-page binary representation of
- 'Mysterious Ways' by U2) claims 'crystal clear CD quality', with no mention
- anywhere of a compression scheme, lossy or otherwise.
-
- One person was wondering how DCC could possibly succeed. Ads like this.
-
- By comparison, the Sony ads for MD go into quite a bit of detail about the
- technology, explaining the ATRAC compression scheme in laymen's terms and
- ranking analog cassettes, MD and CD in terms of sound quality. They spell out
- that MD sound is "nearly the same quality as CD". Which they must do in order
- to continue to sell CD of course. Sony does point out however that with
- recordable MD you can change the order of the tracks and add new ones in the
- middle of a track list.
