- Hi, I posted a summary on best single CD players last week. More
- people reponded to my summary. I hereby thank you all for spending
- time to respond to my message. The updated summary comes as follows:

- Do the Yamaha... I got the CDX950 but the Yamahas have very good sound
- for the money (I think)...
-
- From: mcvey@mprgate.mpr.ca (Iain McVey)
-
- I have a Yamaha 530 from some years ago, and found that the sound was better
- than any other player up to ~$500. Way better than my friends $800 Luxman....

- Will you please post your findings.

- I agree that HK sounds smooth, but the HD7500 (and 7600) sounds much
- smoother than HD7400. If you can't afford the HD7500 (and even if you can)
- any Denon CD-player will be a good choice. They sound smooth and dynamic and
- realistic, and their Lambda system on the newer models is very
- interesting (works with 4 D/A-converters in a system much similar to class
- A amplifiers!). Much much better than any ordinary Onkaha or Yakyo!
-
- Denon is my only choice, but I wouldn't buy any before testing a HK,
- Rotel or a NAD.

-
- I'd recommend the Denon -- I have a DCD660 and really wanted a 680 or
- 690, but they were too expensive for my budget.
- The 660 has a _very_ stable drive -- never mistracked once except on a
- _very_ damaged CD I checked out from a local library which had
- scratches on the business side that were deep enough to confuse the
- beam head. Speed stability is nice enough that the 660 (and the
- 680/690 as I recall from the salesman) have a 'playback speed'
- adjustment for tuning to your own instruments. S/N is good enough
- that my ears can't tell my CD's from live program -- and I grew up
- with half-track 1/4" running at 7.5 - 15ips!
-
- My 660 has a remote, so I'm sure the 680 and 690 do as well. The 680
- has an optical-digital outlet on the back that will plug into Denon's
- DAT decks and digital amps (I think the 690 has this too but check
- before you buy) -- set up your system right and the only analog in the
- system is the output to the speakers!
-
- Have fun!--

- I didn't see your origional post and hence didn't respond. I also
- did not know of this particular player until yesterday. Marantz
- makes a player based off the latest Phillips (Marantz is now owned
- by Phillips) bitstream chipset. The same one that is ued in the
- Rotel 955. Many have claimed that it sounds identical to the
- Rotel. I haven't listened myself, but probably will. It sells
- for $300 list.

- Personally, I recommend the Sony Car Discman 802. It goes for about
- $200. You can control it with a standard Sony remote. It comes with
- all the necessary adapters to use ti thru the tape player in your car.
- It is shock mounted internally and can even play when carried. (Ihave
- a simple "Eddie Bauer" case to tote it around).
-
- IT sounds great. It will even play scratched discs that cause my Sony
- 5-disc changer in my living room to skip. It has a MegaBass feature
- as well.
-
- If you are going to own only one CD player, a portable makes sense.
- It did to me when I started in CDs in 1985 (with a Panasonic portable).
-
- As it turns out, I actually do most of my listening AWAY from home -
- at work while on the computer, or while in the car.

- See if you can find used or clearance NAD/Rotel. The Rotel will outperform
- any of the CD players you mentioned, in my opinion. You can probably find
- it mail order form somewhere for about $349, so on sale/clearance should
- put it right at the $300 mark.

- I just bought a NAD 5425 for about US$280. Couldn't tell the difference
- between it and various others at the same price, and liked the NAD for ease
- of use.
