- I don't have any disagreements with the previous posts - I was definitely a
- Ghoulardi fan and remember watching him for a few years and was crushed
- when he left. He was followed by houlihan who assisted with some of the
- later skits, then houlihan was joined by big chuck sidowski(sp?) for the
- houlihan and big check show. Eventually, houlihan left for greener pastures
- (reminiscent of ghoulardi) and big chuck was joined by little john, a midget
- (who I actually met working at a jewelry store) who was in a number of the
- skits. They are still going strong and are often involved with community
- service activities.
-
- But enough about today - my memories of ghoulardi was watching tv late
- friday night waiting for my dad to come home from work with some hamburgers
- that we could eat after midnight (religious aside: we're Catholic and this
- was back in the days when we couldn't eat meat on Friday). Anyway, there
- was this movie on about a tribe that buried their dead in trees (or some
- assorted nonsense like that) Evidently, some people weren't fully dead and
- the trees came to live and ... well you get the story. Anyway, my mom &
- I were watching and all of a sudden there was this little guy running on the
- screen screaming and yelling - we thought it strange but kept watching. After
- the next commmercial, he came on with a weird vibrating oval surrounding his
- face and he talked about how dumb the movie was and what to watch for next.
- He had a wacky hairdo, a maynard g krebs goatee (for dobie gillis fans) and
- I think crazy glasses. His favorite lines were "Turn Blue, you big knif"
- (pronounced kanif- its fink spelled backwards). and he made jokes
- about Parma (a mostly Polish suburb of Cleveland - you got to remember
- polish jokes were REALLY big then (BTW I'm half polish on my mother's
- side and while we were mildly offended by some of them we also thought
- they were funny i.e. no PCness then)). Manners' Big Boy (the local
- now defunct Big Boy franchiser) also had the Ghoulardi Shake which was
- an orange milkshake with some chunky bits (possibly pineapple??) served
- in a neon flourescent green plastic cup with Ghoulardi's face on it and
- the words "turn blue you big knif" on it (why green and orange when the
- phrase was turn blue is beyond me). Anyway we watched every friday and
- my folks got just as big a kick out of the guy as I did.
-
- Thanks for reminding me of the simpler time (and yeah the first poster who
- started this thread was definitely watching the ripoff "The Ghoul")
