- Here is the ASCII version of the newsletter. It's not as fun as the PostScript
- version, but just as exciting !
-
-
- Hello one and all. Here is the November 1992 Newsletter for OCSUG.
-
- Meeting is Fri, Nov 20 at Odetics. 09:00 - 12:00
-
-
-
- -----------------------Begin newsletter-----------------
-
- What's HOT !!!!
-
- Welcome to the fourth issue of OCSUG. Who says that Christmas doesn't come in
- November? SUN is spoiling us once again with announcements of new products and
- upgrades. See the Solar Flares section which will provide a list of the new
- items from SUN. In accordance with the new announcements, this month we
- feature an article revealing some of the new features of Solaris 2.1.
-
- So get a cup of coffee, sit back and relax, and get ready to enjoy this
- issue.
-
- What Happened Last Time ...
-
- When last we looked in on our intrepid little group, we were sitting around
- the campfire held absolutely riveted by the networking presentations.
-
- The lead off presentation was given by Gene Saunders of Sun. He gave a nice,
- detailed account of the new version of SunNet Manager - revision 2.0. He also
- elaborated on how other ISV networking packages integrate with SunNet Manager.
-
-
- Next up was the Alantec PowerHUB presented by Greg Sonn and Art Laursen. The
- PowerHUB is a high-speed bridge/router that can be used to improve
- peer-to-peer performance, off-loading the servers from routing.
-
- The presentations were rounded out with a review of network acceleration from
- Interphase Corporation by Lance Jay Lee. Their main thrust for improving
- network performance centers around the Interphase NC400 Network CoProcessor.
-
- All three presentations have a nice set of slides. If anyone did not receive a
- copy, please e-mail to Mike Rembis and he will forward you a copy.
-
- Once again, I take this opportunity to thank all of the speakers and their
- representative companies for allowing them to participate.
-
- Meeting Topics
-
-
-
- This month's agenda consists of:
-
- Sun EXPO Review
-
- SPARCworks 2.0
-
- SmartStar VISION
-
- 10th Annual SUG Conference
-
- We will start the meeting with our usual informal roundtable of information
- sharing. Certainly, the most prevalent topic will be Sun's very recent release
- of both new hardware and software that were announced this month, most of
- which are listed below in the Solar Flares spot.
-
- Since this meeting was designated as a programmer's meeting, the topics for
- all presentations will be about programming tools. First up will be the
- presentation of the latest in the line of programming tools offered by Sun by
- Bill Mutchie of Sun. SPARCworks, It 's a programmer's paradise!
-
- Sebastian Nania and Janet Wieczkiewicz from SmartStar Corporation will review
- their Motif-to-SQL Database Application Builder, VISION. A note from their
- brochure:
-
- -----------------------------------------------
- First GUI Builders, Now the Complete Solution
-
- Graphical User Interface (GUI) Builders have demonstrated a dramatic reduction
- in the effort required to create engineering and business applications for
- workstations. The difficulty begins when attempting general purpose SQL
- database access. At SmartStar Corporation, we have taken our vision of
- workstation-based application development and made it a reality. SmartStar
- Vision solves the Motif-to-SQL application builder problems with coding - we
- call it NoGL.
-
- Motif Objects to SQL
-
- Database Applications - Fast
-
- Creating an application with SmartStar Vision is easy. Using the main menu, an
- application archive and its window components can be created. Objects can be
- painted into the window be selecting them from the window editor palette. More
- than 15 object classes with over 100 attributes and 20 methods can be
- controlled in this manner. master regions, scrolling regions, menus, buttons,
- list fields and many other objects including full SQL database linkage can be
- created automatically with coding - no coding, no maintenance - NoGL.
- -------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- And finally, we will conclude with information about the upcoming SUG
- Conference to be held in San Jose in December. Hope to see all of you there !
-
- The meeting will be held at Odetics in Anaheim near Disneyland. See the map at
- the end of this newsletter for details. The next scheduled meeting for the
- OCSUG is tentatively Friday, January 15, 1993.

- "Hello"
-
- "Is there anybody out there ?"
-
-
-
- [soapbox mode on]
-
- I don't know - I'm a stranger in town. No, that's what I said last month.
- Just nod if you can hear me, or wink or wave. What am I talking about ? I'm
- talking about you. Yes, you! You can put down your cup of coffee and listen
- for a moment.
-
- I don't want to sound like I'm whining or redundant, but to tell you the
- truth, I do not receive much input from you on what you would like to get out
- of our meetings or from this chapter of the user group. It seems that everyone
- is content to just show up if the the particular subjects appeal to them. Sure
- there are a few of you who are very helpful and giving toward this project.
- For that I am very grateful.
-
- Please remember, this is your user group. It can only function, thrive and
- survive if we all participate.
-
- I know that complacency is really a lost art form and that there are a lot of
- grand masters out there.
-
- Along the same lines, if everyone is happy with the way things are going,
- please advise me. Feedback from you is the only way I have to learn if I am
- doing what's expected of me.
-
- Of course, this could all just be paranoia creeping in. Maybe this is how
- Roger felt when he left the band.

- New Features For Business Market
-
- The Right Box For Rightsizing
-
-
-
- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 4, 1992 -- SunSoft today introduced a new version
- of the Solaris 2.0 distributed computing environment. Called Solaris 2.1, the
- software boasts new installation, administration, security and
- internationalization features, providing commercial users with the industry's
- most powerful 32-bit software environment for the corporate enterprise.
-
- Based on extensive customer input and testing, the Solaris 2.1 computing
- environment incorporates more than 1,000 product improvements, delivering up
- to a 40% increase in areas of network performance and up to a 50% increase in
- user interaction performance over Solaris 2.0. The Solaris 2.1 software
- includes full symmetric multiprocessing and multi-threading capabilities,
- dramatically increasing system performance. In addition, the new version
- offers major enhancements in the graphics area, providing users with 2D-3D
- capabilities critical to the technical and high-end commercial markets.
-
- Today's announcement adds to the momentum for the Solaris computing
- environment. Sun Microsystems Computer Corp. (SMCC), the leading UNIX system
- supplier, will make Solaris 2.1 available for all existing SPARC systems,
- including its multiprocessor workstations and servers, by the end of the year.
- Solbourne, CompuAdd, Toshiba and Hyundai will use the software in their
- systems targeted for shipment next year.
-
- More than 5,000 32-bit applications -- the largest base in the world-- are
- available for Solaris today. Already, more than 800 of the top applications
- are being ported to the Solaris 2.X environment including products from Oracle
- Corp., Sybase Inc., Lotus Development Corp., Computer Associates
- International, Electronic Data Systems, Autodesk Inc. and Adobe Systems, Inc.
- In addition, the Solaris 2.1 environment is binary compatible with Solaris 2.0
- allowing applications to run without modification.
-
- "Major corporations worldwide are rightsizing their business today, requiring
- CIOs to select optimal solutions for running their corporations efficiently
- and cost effectively," said Edward J. Zander, president of SunSoft, Inc.
- "Solaris 2.1 with its robustness and performance is clearly the `Right Box For
- Rightsizing' for global businesses in this decade and beyond."
-
- "The new capabilities introduced with Solaris 2.1 and ORACLE7 fit
- hand-in-glove to form a solid foundation for the most demanding high-end
