-
- The "Big Dig" is actually two projects:
- a) a third harbor tunnel from the end of the Mass. Pike to Logan Airport
- b) replacing the elevated Central Artery downtown with a tunnel
-
- The first part of this is pretty non-controversial these days.
- The second part is a good idea, but >$1 billion is an expensive
- price to pay just to remove an esthetic blight in the downtown area;
- it won't really improve transportation because it's just replacing
- one highway with another.
-
- For that reason, I believe that the project should not go forward
- at all unless it's combined with a rail link between North and
- South stations.
-
- Boston to Maine rail service will happen no matter what. But
- it would be a lot more useful if trains from Maine could
- run THROUGH Boston to New York. As it is, passengers will have
- to use the Orange and/or Red Lines to connect through Boston.
