- There's a reason for that acronym, which stands for Limited Damage Waiver.
- It's *not* insurance. If you don't have your own personal car insurance,
- I don't think you have any liability insurance when driving a rental car,
- nor can you easily buy it for short-term needs. So, make sure you have no
- assets against which a claim might be made.

- There's another option to consider when looking at the costs of driving:
- monthly rentals. It's probably not a cost-effective option here in
- Massachusetts, but a few years ago one of my friends got a rental car
- in Florida for about $300/month. There was no insurance to pay, no
- maintenance, no tires or oil changes, and he could switch to a different
- color or model any time he wanted. Incredible as it may sound, this
- was actually the cheapest, most hassle-free way to drive at the time.
- (The rental car industry is far more competitive and cut-throat in
- Florida than in New England.)
