- Funny you should ask. The two people who show Asher (the protagonist)
- real kindness and affection are two pivotal characters in the book--
- one is an old acquaintance who tries to get Asher to stop taking drugs
- (for a while) and take a sober look at the events that are frightening
- him, and the other is the psychiatrist who treats him after his arrest.
- Asher doesn't intellectually understand the actions of either character,
- but both cause him to undergo extreme emotional catharses.
