- Okay, I need some really good advice here. I have been
- working on a friend's XT, slowly tuning it up. In the course of
- my work, I upgraded his operating system from DOS 3.2 or 3.3
- (don't remember exactly which) to DOS 5.0. I should probably
- tell you what his system is exactly before proceeding.
-
- Brand "PC-II"
- 8086 XT system (4.77 Mhz)
- 360k Floppy
- Monochrome Video
- No CMOS
- 1 Segate ST-225 MFM Configured as C:
- 1 Segate ST-251 MFM Configured as D:
- 512k Ram
-
- Because his system has no CMOS settings, a version of
- Ontrack Disk Manager loaded off of drive c: to let the system
- know there was a drive d:. This consists of files like
- "DMDRVR.BIN" and "XBIOS.OVL", I think. Anyway, somewhere along
- the line, those files were lost, and the system would only
- recognize c:.
-
- He had no backups of the system that were any good because
- his floppy controller was screwed up when he made them. I
- replaced it, but never asked about backups he may have made. He
- simply said, "Yes, I've got backups." So I just went ahead and
- installed DOS 5.0.
-
- When I tried to access drive D:, I got an "Invalid drive
- specification." Then I decided it would be good idea to install
- the Ontrack Disk manager again so that we could access the data
- on drive d:.
-
- Well, that proved to be a wrong choice. The installation
- routine told me that the drive's format was from an incompatible
- dos version and that I'd have to reformat it in order to use it.
- I obviously don't want to reformat it until it is backed up.
- After that, I'll format it 50 times if it will help.
-
- *****
-
- So, my question is this: How can I back up that data so that I
- may reformat the drive?
-

-
- You can stop reading there if you know the answer. Just
- mail me and tell me what to do. If you'd like to know what I've
- already tried, read on...
-
- I have tried putting the drive into another XT running DOS
- 3.3 (I think) and upon booting, it said "Invalid partition
- table." and locked up.
-
- I have also tried putting it into a 286 with an ST-251 in it
- already. That machine wouldn't even boot with the second drive.
-
-
-
- Any ideas, hints, suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
-
- Thanks,
-
