  11. Winter has arrived early in central New York and I am already
  12. getting tired of hauling water out to the Chicken coop. This
  13. operation is necessary several times a day as the water in
  14. the coop freezes quickly in this weather. Last year we purchased
  15. several Universal Fount heaters from Strombergs. These are basically
  16. round 3 inch high platforms with a heater inside that the waterers
  17. sit on top of. There is a thermostat built in which turns the heater
  18. on whenever the temperature goes below 50F. The units seem reliable
  19. and well made, but I am rather nervous having an electrical source
  20. of heat sitting on top of or close to the dry straw we use for litter.

  22. Has anyone had or heard of a fire caused by these or similar devices ?

  24. Are there any additional precautions I can take ? There is a GFI on 
  25. the circuit. I know that these are very effective in preventing
  26. dangerous shocks, but do they also help prevent fires? (I'm an 
  27. electrical moron.)
