- Antihistamines put ADULTS to sleep (I practically pass out) but make
- many if not most babies more awake. Decongestants make adults and
- babies more wakeful. If you have a baby who bounces off the walls
- when given Triaminic, don't give Triaminic.
-
- So what do you do instead? We had good results with simple saline
- nose spray. The brand we got was Otrivin but since it's a saline
- solution any brand will do. And Tylenol neither keeps them awake
- nor knocks them out, though I have a friend who believes it does
- because her normally-placid babies got fussy once or twice a year
- and were "sedated" (ha ha) by Tylenol. The real story is they
- only fuss when they are in pain (unlike my Beth who had six million
- reasons for fussing) and the Tylenol fixes that and they sleep.
-
- Preventing ear infections is like preventing heart attacks: it's
- mostly genetic. Some kids have short tubes or funny-angled
- tubes or some such, so every URI becomes an ear infection.
- Since Beth got her first ear infection one week after she
- completely weaned, and had them continuously till we changed
- to a daycare that was stricter on ill children, my anecdotal
- advice is keep on nursing and choose your daycare with extra care
- if your child has demonstrated a susceptibility. But others
- have posted (and no doubt will again) of ear infections in
- completely breastfed children, of trying many many daycare
- options, even having a parent stay home, but of the infections
- persist. So YMMV, as always.
