- I paid my first visit ever to an Orthodontist the other day, on behalf of
- my 10-year-old kid. I was very VERY happy to learn that his mouth would
- cost in the low-3-digit range instead of the high-4 as I had expected.
- However, being inexperienced in the realm of expensive mouthwork, and also
- admittedly skeptical, I need some guidance, advice, anecdotes.
-
- Here's the situation: It's basically cosmetic. His adult teeth in front are
- kinda crooked. The two top teeth are ok, but the bottom front ones make a
- backwards V, and the surrounding teeth on the bottom overlap a bit. He has
- about 5 loose baby teeth that still have to come out, and I don't know
- how many adult teeth in various stages of coming in.
-
- The Ortodontist says there is plenty of room for all of them to come in.
- He says in about a year, they'll be in, and some or all of the crooked
- ones might have straightened out, but "you never can tell." I had the
- feeling that he had braces in mind after all the teeth come in.
-
- For now, he wants to put a retainer on the permanent back molars to
- "reserve" the space now available to the teeth that will be coming in.
- He says the back molars may gravitate forward, leaving no room, which
- might necessitate pulling some teeth later on. The retainer is
- not too expensive, though our insurance won't cover it, and it is a
- substantial expense for us. (Our insurance will cover part of the braces,
- if needed in a year.)
-
- My gut feeling is to wait and see what happens over the next year. Maybe
- the molars will shift without the retainer, but maybe they won't. Am I
- being too suspicious of the orthodontist? Is this a good reason to get a
- retainer?
-
- Thanks!
- Ginger
