- Carla Moussavi asked about symptoms that could be asthma (sorry I can't quote;
- my system won't let me).
-
- Yes, it certainly could be asthma, especially the wheezing. My son has had
- maybe-asthma since 2 1/2; they won't call it asthma unless it happens for 2
- seasons, since this year it started with pneumonia! Symptoms: wheezing,
- trouble catching breath, fast breathing rate. Time breaths per minute - under
- 20 is normal, maybe higher with a fever, over 30 definitely a problem! Worst
- at night and in the morning IS characteristic of allergy induced asthma.
- Asthma is pretty common in kids, although less so when they're really young,
- and there is a hereditary link.
-
- If I were you I'd talk to an allergist. My son is very allergic, esp. to
- dust, and this can trigger those symptoms. He's on nasalcrom, a nose spray,
- which has worked wonders (he used to scratch his nose til it bled), and is
- supposed to have no side effects (and I am pretty informed and generally
- skeptical about drugs). The asthma drugs are not so benign, but they seem to
- be necessary in our case. We've counted breathing rates of 60/minute. Pretty
- alarming! I'd bet your son is at least allergic to something. Dust/mold
- seems likely since he's worst after sleeping and dust lives in beds and
- pillows etc! Don't take your pediatrician's word for something that goes
- against your instincts. YOU know your child best.
-
- Let me know what happens. If your son does have allergies/asthma, we can
- commiserate :-(.
