  16. I don't know if you can really prevent them, but then again, I'm
  17. not a doctor, just a parent of two boys who both had several ear
  18. infections prior to reaching 1.5 years of age.

  20. According to several pediatricians that we have spoken with, there
  21. *seems* to be evidence that some children being more prone to ear
  22. infections that others is due to hereditary factors.  I can state
  23. that this is true for our boys and for 80% of friends families we
  24. know.  I don't know if this is entirely true across the board, but
  25. I can believe it due to my own experience and limited research.

  27. As far as the ear infections themselves, and since they're primarily
  28. due to the very small tubes in children's ears, they're not too
  29. preventable, unless you highly limit the access your child has with
  30. other people (young and old).  I know that for our two boys, there
  31. was a span of a month where the oldest wasn't attending daycare and
  32. oddly enough, that was the only month that neither of them got sick.

  34. So, I don't know if any of the above helped, but I know that limiting
  35. outside access (people, not the great outdoors necessarily) is
  36. helpful.

  38. Oh, one more thing on this subject . . .

  40. A lot of people say you shouldn't take children swimming if they have
  41. ear infections or if they're prone to ear infections.  Most people think
  42. it's due to the water getting in their ears or their hair being wet
  43. or whatever, but the real reason is that many, many bacteria are in 
  44. the water and THESE are the culprits which lead to the ear infections.
