- Linda--Your quick message brought tears to my eyes! I have a son who is
- now 7. Somewhere along the line--and I do not know when it happened--he
- grew up. I see him vasalating between wanting some of the "mushy"
- things (like kisses, hugs, snuggling) and trying to be "big" and not
- wanting them. Sometimes he says, "Mommy, can you cuddle with me" and
- then other times (especially when I drop him off at school)--he
- deliberately asks me not to kiss him or say anything "weird" (he means
- things like--"I love you, have a nice day"). If I catch him before he
- gets out the car he doesn't mind a kiss but outside the car, these
- things are off limits. But, I can see the day coming--and not too far in
- the future--when mommy becomes mom---his bedroom is his own private
- haven to escape us and his kisses are reserved for either young girls or
- mom-- but only on Christmas, my birthday or if I beg. He gave up
- kissing relatives about a year or so ago. My sister is the only one who
- deals with that reasonably well. Since she is his favorite person--he
- puts up with her tackling him to the ground and "stealing kisses"--but
- for Nana and grandma and all those great-aunts--they don't like it one
- bit and make a huge fuss over his "NO KISSES" policy. They say they
- will begin stealing them too. Of course, I can't see Nana, Grandma and
- the great-aunts wrestling him to the ground for a kiss!!!!
-
- It is fascinating to watch a child grow. My father used to tell me "in
- a blink of an eye, they are grown." However, he used to say this to me
- after I had been up all night with a screaming infant or after I had
- been chasing a wild, over sugared toddler! Naturally, I would just hope
- he was right---"PLEASE LET HIM GROW UP QUICK AND GIVE ME MY SANITY." I
- can't help but be proud that I managed to raise a child to this
- point--and that I think he is a pretty decent human being. But, now I
- look forward to NOT having the next decade go so quickly--I really want
- my boy to want a hug every now and then--and come to think of it--I will
- truly miss it when he stops calling out to "mommy" for comfort.
-
- I have a 17 month old girl-- people tell me the mom-daughter
- relationship is quite different than the mom-son one. It doesn't
- matter, though. I'll get used to whatever I have to---just as long as I
- have my 2 dear children and I get a few kisses a year..........Judi
