  13.      Our grandpa showed my cousins and I a neat "magic" trick over the
  14. weekend, and I thought I'd share it with everyone.  You need:
  15.      A strong magnet
  16.      A shoebox with a cover
  17.     A table
  18.      A 40-inch long piece of thread
  19.     A metal paper clip
  20.  
  21.      Put the magnet inside one end of the box.  Put some books inside the
  22. box to hold it down, then cover the box.  Sit the box on a table so the end
  23. with the magnet hangs over the edge.
  24.      Tie the paper clip to one end of the thread.  Put the opposite end
  25. of the thread on the floor dirctly under the magnet, and sit another book
  26. on this end.
  27.      Raise the paper clip toward the box, and adjust the thread's length,
  28. pulling the thread from beneath the book, until the clip is held up without
  29. falling.  Stand back, and you will see the paper clip floating in mid-air.
  30.      Since magnet fields extend in all directions and pass through the
  31. cardboard shoe box, the clip is attracted by the field, but is kept from
  32. sticking to the box by the thread.

  35.      Here's a way to make a compass.  You need:
  36.      A needle
  37.      A magnet
  38.      A bowl of water
  39.      A 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch thick cork.

  41.      Magnetize the needle by stroking it at least 50 times in 1 direction with
  42. either end (pole) of the magnet.
  43.      Float the cork in the bowl of water.  Carefully center the needle on the
  44. cork.
  45.      THe magnetized needle will be attracted to the Earth's magnetic field
  46. and turn north toward it.
