  11. Here is a summary of advice I received about washing stuffed animals that
  12. are labeled "Surface Wash Only".
  13.  
  14. The majority of people who replied washed stuffed animals or dolls in
  15. a pillow case in the washer, on gentle cycle, and had great results.
  16. Some also dried the animal in the dryer on low or medium heat also
  17. with great results.  There were a few notable disasters, and generally
  18. people recommended not taking the chance with a child's "lovey" unless
  19. a replacement is easily obtainable.

  31. Possible consequences of washing in washing machine:

  33. Glued things (ears, eyes, noses) may come off (some can be sewn back on).
  34. Stuffing may expand causing seams to rip.
  35. Stuffing may come out.
  36. Toys with long hair--hair may get matted.
  37. Some stuffing can't tolerate being soaked.
  38. In one case, soft fir became short and bristly.
  39. Dryer might melt stuffing.

  43. If tag doesn't say what the stuffing is made out of, make a
  44. small hole and peak to try and judge if it can handle it.

  46. Toys R Us sells Teddy Bear Cleaner for surface washables (if don't
  47. want to risk machine washing).

  49. One person said surface washing left the animals sticky and machine
  50. washing worked much better.

  52. One person washed animal in minibasket of washer (instead of pillow
  53. case technique) and said it worked fine.

  56. Thanks for all the responses!  I still haven't decided if I will take
  57. the risk with my daughter's doggie (it is a lovey), but this will
  58. certainly help with her other animals!
