- MACEDONIAN GENERAL WARNS OF CRITICAL PERIOD AHEAD
- Skopje. General Todor Atanasovski, a member of Macedonian
- President Kiro Gligorov's Security Council, has warned that his
- country faces a critical period ahead.
- He told the Macedonian daily newspaper, "Nova Makedonija," that
- Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia-Hercegovina were invaded by Serbia
- just as they were about to be recognised by the European
- Community. General Atanasovski (retired) said his country could
- be invaded as recognition by the EC looked imminent.
-
- ALBANIAN LEADER CLAIMS RIOT WAS SET UP BY MACEDONIA
- Skopje. The parliamentary leader of the ethnic Albanian party in
- Macedonia, Muhamed Halili, claimed that last week's riot by
- ethnic Albanians in Skopje, the Macedonia capital, was set up by
- the Macedonian Interior Ministry, whose objective was to focus
- world attention on the republic's vulnerability to ethnic
- conflict, and strengthen its case for recognition.
- In an interview for "Nova Makedonija" he said that he did not
- condone the use of violence, and the destruction of shops and
- police vehicles during the riot. Halili added that the Macedonian
- police should punish those responsible for the riot.
- The ethnic Albanian politician said his party had not yet
- considered withdrawing from the coalition government of
- Macedonia.
-
- BULGARIA SUPPORTS BALKAN STABILITY
- Skopje. Bulgaria will support any diplomatic initiative that
- brings stability to the Balkans, in particular Greece's recent
- offer to respect Macedonia's existing borders, according to the
- Bulgarian Foreign Minister.
- Stojan Ganev said the Greek plan was aimed at Albania and Serbo-
- Yugoslavia rather than his country, because Bulgaria had since
- the middle of January of this year categorically denied having
- any territorial claims on Macedonia.
- The Bulgarian President, Zelju Zelev, has also added his approval
- to the Greek plan, but he told the Greek daily newspaper,
- "Solun," that Greece's insistence on a change of name for
- Macedonia was "incomprehensible" and "unreasonable."
-
- FRANCE TO SEND DIPLOMAT TO MACEDONIA
- Skopje. France will send a diplomat to the Republic of Macedonia,
- and will also allow the republic to set up a diplomatic office
- in Paris, according to a statement issued by the French Foreign
- Minister, Roland Dumas.
-
- CANADIANS MARCH FOR MACEDONIAN RECOGNITION
- Toronto. According to the November edition of the Canadian-
- Macedonian Federation Bulletin, on Sunday, November 22, a parade
- commemorating Macedonian independence will be held at Queen's
- Park, Toronto, Canada, at 1.00pm. Organised by the Macedonian
- Youth Association, the parade marks the achievement of
- independence for Macedonia and will allow the Canadian-Macedonian
- Community to voice its demand for Canadian and world recognition
- of Macedonia as an independent nation-state.
-
- CANADIAN ETHNIC COMMUNITIES ASKED TO SUPPORT RESOLUTION
- Toronto. According to the CMF Bulletin, November edition, a
- resolution supporting international recognition of Macedonia had
- been initiated by the CMF and has been circulated for signature
- amongst the various Canadian ethnic communities. The declaration
- includes a plea to the United Nations to "publicly state and
- certify by treaty the independence of the Republic of Macedonia
- and the inviolability of its borders and... its acceptance into
- the community of peaceful nations."
