- [This is from the Chronic Pain Conference]
-
- WB>How did your visit go? Along with you, I too hope that getting
- WB>the letter prior to the visit rather than during the visit didn't
- WB>turn them off.
-
- The letter saved a lot of time, in my opinion.
-
- The neurosurgeon and the psychologist were somewhat sympathetic with
- what I said, but chose to remain "neutral" in terms of recommending
- amputation.
-
- I expected that.
-
- I first talked with the psychologist, and he suggested a compromise.
-
- His suggestion was that I go through 1 month of physical exercise
- at my local PT department, to get in top physical condition for whatever
- happens.
-
- His speculation was that IF my pain problem has become a "learned
- pattern" (ie is now totally in my head), then the exercise should
- definitely stop it in no more than 1 month's time.
-
- I said ok. Seemed perfectly reasonable to me, even if he was trying
- to sneak a little bit of pain management on me :-).
-
- I then spoke to the neurosurgeion. He took one look at the foot and
- leg and said "Yup! You've definitely had a sympathectomy." I mentioned
- that the sympathetic nerves that were removed were sent to a pathology
- lab to verify that they were the correct ones....hmmm...and the lab
- report stated that they were AND that there was "noticeable thickening"
-
- I found out that RSD produces a physical "thickening" of the sympathetic
- nerves.
-
- Boy is Mayo in trouble! :-)
-
- The neurosurgeon also claimed neutrality concerning amputation and
- stressed that it may not work, since the sympathectomy didn't.
-
- I knew this, of course, and told him so.
-
- He too suggested a compromise. He suggested that I try a dorsal column
- stimulator on a temporary (ie external) basis to see if it might work.
-
- I wasn't aware that this was possible, so my stubbornness about
- amputation softened a little.
-
- I told him that I was willing to try that.
-
- Finally, I attended a conference with the neurosurgeon, psychologist,
- and the private nurse hired by Workmen's Comp.
-
- During the conference, the DSC option was discussed. However, the
- exercise idea was thrown out the window.
-
- Additionally, the nurse said "Jim, I'm here to tell you that Workmen's
- Comp. absolutely will not cover any surgery that produces increased
- disability".
- Continued next message...
