- Regarding wheelchairs for amputees - for a single leg amputee it
- depends on the persons ability to balance on crutches. I would
- strongly urge anyone to give crutches a fair chance before buying
- a wheelchair or giving up on crutches. I know there are amputees
- that put their leg on when they get out of bed and never take it
- off until they get back in bed but most of my amputee friends
- and I are at the other end of the sprectrum. I use my leg when
- it makes life easier for me like going to the grocery store but if
- all I am doing is going to the movies, I am on my crutches. Loading
- and unloading a wheelchair just to run into a store would be a drag.
- also getting around in a crowd in a chair seems like it would be much harder
- and getting things off a high shelf in the store likewise. These are
- things that full time wheelchair users seem to complain about. My
- advice is to get a good pair of metal underarm crutches and learn how
- to use them. I say underarm crutches because you can actually get
- around with them with your hands free to carry things, espacially
- for very short distances. I can carry 2 drinks around in my place
- while on my crutches. A lady I know can carry 2 full bags of groceries
- while on crutches. I sometimes feel "disabled" around her. My only
- problem with crutches is a long flight of stairs when I sometimes feel
- unbalanced. Of course stairs and wheelchairs don't mix well. And last
- but not least, that middle of the night need to get up is a lot easier
- if all you do is grab your crutches. Oh, don't forget that hopping is
- also a quick way to move around like in the kitchen.
