  14.                     STARTING UP A SOFTWARE COMPANY

  16. I am considering starting up a software company. The company would
  17. initially be based on a shrink-wrap 50-100$ educational/game software
  18. for the PC and the Macintosh markets.
  19.  
  20. To get the project going I need to get some investment in - hence, a
  21. business plan is called for. I am looking for any information
  22. investors can be interested in. For example:

  24. * MARKET DATA: 
  25.         - number of shrink-wrap software companies.
  26.         - what is their annual average sales? 
  27.         - how many have received venture capital financing?
  28.         - how many of them went public?
  29.         - some figures about the number of software packages sold in the PC 
  30.           and on the Mac markets for similar products (successes and 
  31.           failures).  
  32.  
  33. * PRODUCT: 
  34.         - availability of similar products.
  35.         - development costs.
  36.         - packaging costs.
  37.         - other costs...
  38.  
  39. * SALES: 
  40.         - who are the main whole-sellers/mail-order companies?
  41.         - usual percentage maker gets from whole-seller and mail order
  42.           companies.
  43.         - what is the distribution channel percentage?
  44.         - how difficult is to get such companies to sell your software?
  45.  
  46. * And of course important CONTACTS.
  47.  
  48. etc. etc. etc.

  50. Any references to books, magazines, articles or good ole personal
  51. experience on this subject would be GREATLY appreciated.
