- Frankly, I'm not all that concerned about *their* protection -- I'm
- worried about mine and my fellow firefighters'. If some yahoo from the
- press looking for that 'special' shot gets himself hurt or killed, I
- chalk it up to natural selection at work. But who do you think has to
- go in and get them out when they *do* get hurt? That risks *my* people
- and that's unacceptable.
-
- On a more mundane level, I'm concerned about general order on the
- incident scene. I don't tolerate any of *my* people running around
- unsupervised on the scene (aka 'freelancing'), so I *damn* sure don't
- want some civilian getting underfoot. Good site management is the key to
- scene safety and wandering fools are not part of good site management.

-
- In other words, be nice to the press -- regardless of the stupid and
- dangerous things they often do -- because they might blackmail your
- department with bad ink? <g> Good press relations are useful -- but
- under *no* circumstances will they dictate the level of safety enforced
- at any incident under my control.
