- I guess the main thing that depends on EMS switching from Private Companies
- to City/Town Full-time Paid Fire Departments, is the area and call volume
- of the department. In my hometown (West Hartford, CT) we have a fulltime
- paid fire department (5 Engines, 2 Trucks, 1 Command Vehcl.) and we have
- EMS covered by a private Commerical ambulance company. The town (as far as
- I know) owns 2 4x4's which are ALS fly-cars, staffed by the Commerical
- company's Paramedics. These vehicles are NOT allowed to be removed from the
- town (that is they cannot be pulled from town to respond to another call
- that the company has running). This system works well, except sometimes the
- company gets very busy and has difficulty getting an ambulance available to
- respond to a call in town. NOW, since our FD is not a VERY busy department,
- I think a good idea would be to move ALS as well as BLS transporting to the
- FD, and have the Commerical's back-up the FD. And if this is not possible,
- at least move the ALS fly-cars to the FD (ie, FF-Paramedics) and make all of
- the FFs EMTs and then roll ALS and an Engine on all EMS calls, and have
- the Commercial provide the transport. This way if the commerical is
- backed up and will take a little longer getting an ambulance available
- the FD can have the pt packaged and all ready to be transported when the
- ambulance arrives.
-
- Just a thought.
