- JN|O|Don't get me wrong, I am not saying all minors should not be
- allowed,
- JN|O|but when our VFD allowed 18 year olds in instead of 21 year
- JN|O|olds, that is when the quality of fire service started dropping.
-
- If your quality of service did drop because of 18 year olds your
- officers aren't doing their job. The agressiveness of youth, is a
- wonderful attribute when added with the experience of older
- veterans. But the real point is, EVERYONE MUST FOLLOW THE MASTER
- PLAN of your Officer In Charge.
-
- After a problem with an 18 year old many years ago, our bylaws
- were changed to limit firefighters to "over 21". A few years
- back, we were able to get the rules changed. We now allow 18 year
- olds to be probationary firefighters with driving limited until
- their 21 st birthday (Insurance Carrier Rule). Following that we
- have instituted a Junior Firefighter program for youths 14-16,
- and 16-18. The firefighters that have moved up through this
- program have been assets to the department and the community.
-
- From my experience, I can tell you it isn't easy. Our biggest
- problems at first came from sons of Officer's. After years of
- hanging around the firehouse they knew enough to get into
- trouble. Keeping them seperate from regular firefighters, and
- strict discipline has kept things under control. Hard work has
- not diminished any enthusiams yet!
-
- Our purpose with the youth is to PREPARE THEM TO BE FIREFIGHTERS
- as they mature, WHILE WE DO OUR JOB NOW. Volunteer or Career,
- we must be professional in the management of our business!
