- Donald Poole makes some very good points which I won't retype in
- any form because if I read them you did, too.
- I was on an all-volunteer department for 5 years or so, now I'm
- on a paid department, and I'm the secretary of IAFF Local 1176.
- I mention this only to reinforce that I've been on both sides of
- the paid-volly fence, and I'll tell you, the volly company I was
- on didn't do much "wrong" in the career firefighter perspective.
- Usually people judge the whole company by the actions of one
- or two people they see.
- I think the friction comes in when paid departments have some
- vollys to augment the forces at a big fire. Payroll is kept down,
- and you still have manpower at big fires. Administration will
- sometimes use the vollys as a threat to the full-timers, as in,
- "If you guys want a raise, I'll lay half of you off and man the
- stations with volunteers!" Then you explain the problem to the
- vollys, who continue to show up for drills and such, as if your
- problems don't affect them. Most are young guys who have never
- worked in a labor union atmosphere, and they don't understand
- when the full-timers don't act happy to see them show up at the
- station and drink all the coffee!
- In Ohio, new recruits on a full time dept. take a 240 - hour
- basic training class. This is the law. New volunteers take a
- 36 - hour class. This is also the law, although nothing prevents
- a volunteer from taking the 240 - hr. class (except the cost.)
- We have drill one day a week, every week. I'm sure some volly
- FDs do, too, but A-turn, B-turn and C-turn each have drill,
- so you're sure to get training on a continuing basis.
- I realize that training does not equate with professionalism,
- but on the other hand if you're doing it all the time, you're
- bound to retain more info than someone who does it a couple
- of times a year. Or at least that's my opinion.
