  12. Several years back, there was a case in Texas (Leeper vs. Board of Education)
  13. which established the legality of homeschooling in Texas.  The ruling declared
  14. that education must be adequately provided in five areas of study:
  15.  
  16.     (1) Reading
  17.     (2) Writing
  18.     (3) Arithmetic
  19.     (4) History
  20.     (5) Citizenship
  21.  
  22. As long as it can be shown that these five areas of study have been tought
  23. there is no legal action that the state of Texas can take against one who
  24. homeschools (i.e. a warrant doesn't do officials any good).

  26. This case, however, is being revisited at the Texas Supreme Court in Jan.
  27. of 1993.  Freedom to homeschool in Texas may be hurt by the outcome of
  28. this decision.  If you are a Texan who is either currently homeschooling
  29. or thinking about doing it in the future,  I urge you to apply pressure
  30. to your local and state representatives to create legislation which
  31. supports homeschooling.  With Governor Ann in there with "institutional"
  32. reformation, our individual educational rights are at stake.  Don't get
  33. me wrong....Ann can do whatever she likes with our wonderful system--
  34. I just ask to retain the freedom to homeschool as Thomas Edison and
  35. Albert Einstein had the opportunity to do.
