- US/CUBA FRIENDSHIPMENT UPDATE
-
- November 20, 1992
-
- According to a report for the office of IFCO (Interfaith
- Foundation for Community Organization), Reverend Lucius Walker,
- Executive Director of IFCO and a coordinator of the
- Friendshipment carrying material aid to Cuba, was arrested by US
- officials on Friday afternoon, November 20. Rev. Walker was able
- to cross the border once, carrying some material aid into Mexico.
- When he returned to carry more material aid over the border he
- was arrested on the US side. Two other men, whose names are not
- known at this time, were also arrested. A woman who was reported
- to have bitten a policeman was also arrested. It was not clear
- who attacked who first. The woman's identity is not known at
- this time.
-
- The caravan needs emergency donations of money for legal and
- bail fees. Also, the more than 100 participants in the caravan
- are waiting in Laredo, Texas, to see how the situation gets
- resolved. They must be housed and fed. Tax deductible
- contributions can be sent to IFCO/Pastors for Peace, 402 West
- 145th Street, New York, New York 10031. A demonstration is
- planned in New York City for Monday, November 23, details to
- follow.
-
- The Friendshipment is asking people to contact their
- congressional representatives to demand that the Friendshipment
- be allowed to enter Mexico with the material aid. The
- congressional switchboard number is 202-224-3121. People can
- also contact Mr. Huddleston, the Coordinator of the Office of
- Cuban Affairs, 202-647-9272, or FAX 202 736-4476; Richard Newcomb,
- Office of Foreign Assets Control, 202-622-2510 and Michael
- Schmitz, Chief Counsel for the Office of Customs, 202-927-6900.
- Register your objection to the US government's detaining the
- Friendshipment. You may also contact Lawrence Eagleburger, Acting
- Secretary of State, in Washington DC, c/o "Vicki."
-
- The Friendshipment is bringing attention to the inhumane,
- more than thirty-year-old embargo the US has placed against Cuba,
- and which was recently tightened by the passage of the Torricelli
- law. It is carrying powdered milk, bicycles, medicines and
- bibles to the people of Cuba. In Cuba the caravan is to be
- hosted by various churches.
-
- Watch this space for further updates, or call IFCO at
- 212-926-5757.
